Juniper Networks Phone Interview

Currently, many router/networking companies are not doing great[JNP, CSCO, BRCD]. Juniper Networks, I read on LightReading, provided a grim forecast for the year 2011.

But I like Juniper Networks. Through a friend, I forwarded my resume at Juniper. All my interviews with them in the past [yes, I did multiple interviews with them :)] was very challenging. So, I was looking forward to this one.

The phone interview lasted about 30 minutes. I was interviewed by a Senior Manager in Mobility Business Unit. Most of the questions he asked was based on my past experience/resume.

I have over 4 years experience working in Layer 2 protocols and 802.1q in particular. The questions were something like these:

Overall, I felt I did ok in the interview and got a call for on-site interview. You can find that post here.

(a) Explain my project/module, what does it do?

(b) Have you worked on forwarding plane for 802.1q implementation?

(c) In your resume, there is reference to Inter Chassis Redundancy [ICR]. Can you please explain it what is your role in developing this feature.

(d) You have experience with AAA/RADIUS protocols, please explain what you know about them.

(e) Manager asked me if I am familiar with packet headers [IP, TCP/UDP etc] and I know the packet flow in a ping [ICMP inside IP inside Ethernet]. I told him that I have my laptop in front of me with all the packet descriptions listed. He seemed to have taken aback, but appreciated my frankness.

(f) A question on setting/unsetting of a bit in an integer.

(i) On a wire, if we use a packet sniffer, how can we determine if we received an 802.1q packet or a regular ethernet packet.

Overall, I felt I did ok in the interview and got a call for on-site interview. You can find that post here.
